First up this month, and something to look forward to is on Wednesday, 10th of June from 10 am until 1 pm. Rita will be leading this session with a theme of Birds Beasts & Blossoms and employing her usual style of art with colour,  collage and a contemporary vibe.

Rita has suggested that you take a look at Matisse’s work particularly his  collages, which,  will undoubtedly help with the workshop.
Bring all the usual art materials incl scissors, tweezers, glue. A mount & frame if you have one.
Bring any unused painted papers & decent magazines like country life are useful. Rita will supply lots of printed / coloured papers & extras.
Come & have fun and get your creative juices flowing, collaging ,printing, and experimenting.  Rita.

It sounds like a very different type of morning and I have no doubt it will be enormous fun.

Our next event is on Wednesday 24th June 10am til 3pm and is Pastel workshop with Local Artist and Teacher Jill Colquhoun Barrett. We will be creating a summer meadow with your own source material or a picture that Jill will supply, it’s up to you. Jill will have Pastelmat paper for sale at £1.20 per sheet for you to work on. If you don’t have any or many pastels just bring what you have anyway and give it a go. (You might be able to borrow some!!)
Here’s the info that Jill sent  me.

Soft Pastels Summer Meadows, Cartmel 2026

Inspired by the richness of summer light, this soft pastel workshop will explore meadows, grasses, hedgerows and trees in full leaf, capturing the colour and atmosphere of the summer landscape.…..I’ll guide you through my approach to working with soft pastels, beginning with a painterly wet base before gradually building layers of colour, depth, blending, mark-making, and texture, to capture the essence of the landscape.

We’ll begin by creating an initial wet underpainting using pastels with rubbing alcohol. This quickly establishes the dark values and general composition before developing pastel work over the top. Whether this approach is familiar to you or completely new, there will be plenty of opportunity to experiment explore and develop your own response to the subject.

Soft pastels come in a wide range of colours and qualities, hardness and softness. The more colours you have, the more flexibility you will have for layering and blending, but please just bring whatever you already own. The emphasis will be on how we use them rather than having a full range of materials.

The surface you work on makes a big difference with soft pastels, particularly when using wet techniques. I will have pastelmat paper available on the day from £1.20 per sheet.

I will provide the rubbing alcohol.

For reference, if you wish to buy your own paper, I use ‘Clairefontaine Pastelmat’ a little smaller than A4 in size. I’m using white, as we are painting our own base, but any light colour is fine.

Suggestions of equipment to bring:

1. Photo of summer meadow/landscape (I will send a reference photo you are welcome to print and bring along)
2. Soft pastels
3. Pastel paper (available to buy on the day)
4. Drawing board (thick card is also fine)
5. Small table easel if you own one
6. Watercolour brush ( one stiffer bristle or fan brush would be fine)
7. Kitchen roll, masking tape, apron
8. Wet wipes and fixative (not essential but useful)

This sounds like a great workshop, can you put my name down Rita please. To book your place please contact Rita on: email. ritadeby45@gmail.com or 07587705842.

Now into July, and the first get together that we have to look forward to is a still life workshop led by Gwen Bellamy on Wednesday 8th July 10am till 1pm..  Here’s what Gwen has put together for us all.
Hi everyone, the theme on the 8th of July will be “Still Life”.

I will be putting together a large arrangement of various objects which will be positioned in the centre of the room, with our tables arranged around the subject in a circle.  This may require us to share the long tables so that we can fit in the space, and not be so far away that we can’t see the objects! This is designed to be viewed from all angles so that everyone has a different aspect to work from.  At the end of the morning we hope to have a collection of pictures showing the complete 360 degree aspect of the arrangement as a collaboration of all our work!

For this session I’ve decided to go back to my Still Life lessons from my long distant college days, hence the idea of a group arrangement. I hope it creates an enjoyable shared artistic experience. Please work in any medium of your choice.

If you’d prefer to work independently, please feel free to bring along your own subject matter; whether it be a bowl of fruit, a vase of flowers, or any other item which piques your interest!

Looking forward to seeing you all.
Gwen

Thanks Gwen that sounds like it will be a really fun morning with each of us creating a slightly different piece if work. For new members: You don’t have to sign up with Rita, just come along and enjoy a bit of fun and each others company and we can pass the sweeties round the circle.

The fourth session we are planning is on Wednesday 22nd July from 10 – 1pm.
This was to be an exhibition clinic for everyone but perhaps more aimed towards newer members. We will still have the clinic but after we have welcomed the children from Grange to our fold once more. I believe there are currently 5 or 6 little ones that are desperate to come and do some art with us and have a few chocolate treats no doubt.

The details of this little get together is yet to be finalised so I will keep you posted. We will have the exhibition clinic straight afterwards. If any of you have any particular ideas or suggestion or would like to bake a treat do please let me or Val H know.  It will be school holiday then I know but do try and pop along even for a little while.

Just one more thing to mention if you still have the energy. Francis Winder who provided a lovely workshop on ‘experimenting with watercolour’ at Witherslack Hall for us recently emailed me to suggest a book that may be useful to some of our members who haven’t necessarily had a lot of watercolour experience (me) . It’s The Watercolour Artist’s Bible by Marylin Scott. Search Press £14.99. Looks pretty good I think.

Phew …Thats it I think. See you all soon.
