The first workshop to look forward to, is on Wednesday 13th May from 10 til 1 and Jane Pape is in charge.
Jane has kindly volunteered to provide a workshop and we thank her very much for that. After studying Art and Technology at Twickenham College in her formative years a career in art in some way was definitely on the cards for Jane. She has enjoyed a career drawing, illustrating and painting and using her artistic talents throughout the years. She worked on the National Trust magazine and Pony magazine, so can paint a pretty good horse. She also created the large pretty amazing millennium map that resides in Cartmel Priory. I hope you’ll come and support her. I am gutted that I can’t come as I love painting horses!!!

Paper Some cartridge or other ‘rough’ sketching paper….as large as you like
(l’m using wallpaper!). In fact a page or two from a newspaper might be fun…
Brushes Large round with good points for long sweeping strokes….maybe 10-12’s
Small rounds 4-6-8’s for details. Plus if you have any of the ‘mad’ ones like ‘swordliners’ or ‘extended needlepoint’……. or 1/2” – 1” flats…. (We’re not doing Munnings, Stubbs or Peter Beigel today!

)Pens ‘Dipping’ pens with different nibs are great. If you have a ‘cola pen’ that’s even better (lf not, we can make them during the session) Otherwise anything from the usual ‘fineliners’ to a ‘Sharpie’ will do…
Inks Anything you have will be fine. You can get some great effects with good old Quink if you have it. Or Indian ink….whatever….N.B. you’ll need ink containers with wide tops to dip a cola nib in. I’ll bring some mini jamjars…..
Pastels/chalks or charcoal
Watercolours or Acrylics
So pack up your saddlebags, put on your stetsons and come enjoy ‘Horsing around with horses’ – as Julia so delightfully put it

The next event is another inspiring workshop with Francis Winder on Wednesday 27th May from 10 -3. Cost is £25.00.
This time Francis will be exploring Watercolour to achieve atmosphere with colour and effects. She normally has a few pictures on the go and combines lots of different techniques, so it is possible to learn a great deal from her. She has a lovely loose style that can definitely help you to achieve atmosphere in a painting. Francis will send a list of equipment required and pictures she will be using in due course so I will forward them in time for the workshop. Out third event to tempt you, is a trip to Farfield Mill in Sedbergh on Thursday 21st May. If you haven’t been before it really is well worth a visit. There’s a vibrant display of art, pottery, jewellery, felting, weaving, wool and yarns, paintings, printing and much more together with the history of the mill and various demos of the old mill machinery. If we arrive for around 10.30am and perhaps have a coffee first. I have arranged lunch for 12.30 in a private room. Lunch is a variety of sandwiches, homemade soup and tea and coffee. You can buy cake from the cafe if you’re still hungry!

Cola Pens. If you haven’t heard of a cola pen before it is literally a pen made from a cola can (other drinks are available) a stick or old paint brush and a small piece of masking tape and a pair of old scissors. You’ll find it on good old google but I know that Jane will help anyone to make one. It’s great for making loose marks with ink or paint.
