EQUIPMENT LIST FOR
BEN MCLEOD FINE ART:drawing and painting workshops/ demos.
This list is NOT exhaustive… but the basics of what will be required.
It is always a good idea to add to this list as you develop your own work and approach – art materials can be expensive and receiving items as presents or adding bit by bit tends not to hit the pocket so dramatically!
• Pencil or selection of pencils – from 2H (hard) – 6B (black)
• Willow charcoal – Rowney do a popular range but it does not have to be – various thicknesses are available… go for what you like using (thicker would require larger paper to work on)
• Eraser and/ or putty rubber
• Fixative
• Sketch book or paper
• Selection of oil paints (at least red, blue, yellow and white) – Daler Rowney GEORGIAN range or Windsor & Newton as examples… plenty of other good brands: maybe venture into local art shop to see and ask. The cheap type available anywhere will almost definitely be a false economy with poorer mix and depth
• Paint brushes – again the cheaper ones in discount stores will usually be poor quality and more difficult to work with. Good brushes are expensive but will last. Brushes are available in such a wide variety of shape and size but don’t be confused. I would suggest at least 2 – a flat and a filbert (which has more rounded off edges). They have different numbers which relate to size: if you can get smaller and larger then that will help to vary your paint marks
• Palette and palette knife (not essential to begin with)
• White spirit or turps to thin the paint (low odour is preferable)
• Some images to work from
• A few stretched canvas or canvas boards (up to 10×12” – larger than that if you want): these are now readily available and can be purchased at your discount bookstores at very reasonable prices and they are fine… just check that the canvas does not look too sagged or dented which can be an issue with the larger sizes
Please do wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or marked or a least some covering to go over you
